Where you are standing
First Street, Little Tokyo
The block between Central and San Pedro is a National Historic Landmark. Fugetsu Do has folded mochi here since 1903. Brass plaques underfoot mark the storefronts that stood before 1942, when 30,000 Nikkei were removed. The yagura tower rises two blocks west. This is where Nikkei Los Angeles begins, and where it has kept beginning.

Bronzeville to South Bay
In 1942 Little Tokyo emptied under Executive Order 9066 and was renamed Bronzeville. This corridor traces the return, and the second home built south along the Harbor Freeway.
