Three monumental walls anchor it. The community, the gardens, the temples, the businesses and the Friendship City agreements are the corridor itself.

Japan arrives in Los Angeles. Little Tokyo welcomes it. Sport becomes a bridge between contemporary Japan and Japanese American Los Angeles.
One hundred fifty feet tall and sixty feet wide on the eleventh story east wall of the Miyako Hotel at First and Central, painted freehand with no grids and no projections. Vargas, who grew up in Boyle Heights, turned the wall to face the First Street bridge so the mural greets the neighborhood on the other side of the river. A street corner at the gateway of the oldest Japanese American community in Los Angeles became an international destination, and the foot traffic lands in family owned restaurants, shops and cultural institutions.

Three athletes. Two Friendship Cities. One bridge between Japan and Los Angeles.
Twelve stories on the south wall of the DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance. Vargas describes Ohtani, Yamamoto and Sasaki not as athletes on a wall but as cultural ambassadors carrying Japan into Los Angeles. Torrance holds the highest concentration of Japanese Americans in the contiguous United States, and the city signed Friendship City agreements with Bizen in August 2024 and Oshu in October 2024. Discover Torrance already treats the wall as a visitor attraction with an augmented reality activation on site. The Companion does not replace that experience, it hands you to it.

One building becomes two sided cultural infrastructure. Japan on the south wall. Los Angeles on the north.
Announced this week and currently being created on the north side of the DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance, featuring Justin Herbert and Derwin James Jr. The announcement frames it explicitly as the counterpart to Samurai of the Diamond on the south wall, a dual sided sports landmark on Hawthorne Boulevard with the ambition of making the corridor a world class cultural destination. Until the unveiling this node stays marked in progress. After September 8 a single status field flips and the node becomes permanent.

Where you are standing
First Street, Little Tokyo
The block between Central and San Pedro is a National Historic Landmark. Fugetsu Do has folded mochi here since 1903. Brass plaques underfoot mark the storefronts that stood before 1942, when 30,000 Nikkei were removed. The yagura tower rises two blocks west. This is where Nikkei Los Angeles begins, and where it has kept beginning.

Bronzeville to South Bay
In 1942 Little Tokyo emptied under Executive Order 9066 and was renamed Bronzeville. This corridor traces the return, and the second home built south along the Harbor Freeway.
